Open AccessOral Cancer: The Intersection of Medicine and Dentistry
Authors: Verena Lengston.
Abstract
Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) represents a significant global health burden, characterized by high morbidity, mortality, and frequently delayed diagnosis. This paper examines the critical intersection between dental and medical disciplines in addressing the multifaceted challenge of oral cancer. Through a comprehensive review of current literature and clinical practice, we establish that optimal patient outcomes depend on seamless collaboration across professional boundaries. The dental professional serves as the frontline sentinel for early detection, while medical specialists provide sophisticated oncologic treatment. The continuum of care necessitates ongoing dialogue between these fields, particularly in risk assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, management of complications, and longterm survivorship. This paper delineates specific protocols for dental involvement at each stage of the cancer journey, addresses current barriers to interdisciplinary collaboration, and proposes educational and systemic reforms to strengthen this essential partnership. The evidence presented supports the conclusion that integrated dental-medical approaches significantly improve survival rates, functional outcomes, and quality of life for patients with oral cancer.
